Havasupai Waterfalls: A Place I Keep Coming Back To

Havasupai is one of those places I keep coming back to. The turquoise water, waterfalls, and red canyon walls get your attention, but the memories around them are what stay with me.

I have returned over the years, built relationships, and watched the landscape change. The photos bring back more than a view. They bring back the people, conversations, and little moments around it.

Mooney Falls is usually the one I lean toward when someone asks for a favorite. But Havasupai is more than one waterfall, and it is more than somewhere to get a photo. Here is a little of what keeps bringing me back, through the photos and moments I have brought home.

What keeps bringing me back to Havasupai

Some of my strongest memories are not of the falls at all. They are of getting to know people, hearing their stories, and being personally welcomed into homes for homemade tortillas and fried bread. Those moments are part of what makes this place special to me.

I love bringing home a photograph that helps me remember a day. Sometimes it is the view that brings it back. Other times, it is a conversation or a little moment that happened around it. That is the part a photo cannot always show, but it is still there for me when I look at it.

Which Havasupai waterfall is your favorite?

The contrast is what gets me every time. Bright turquoise water against red canyon walls, with trees and cascades filling in the space around them. There is a lot to take in before you even pick up the camera.

Havasu Falls is one of the views that brings people here, but Mooney Falls is my personal favorite. I also like showing more than one big waterfall. The wider views and smaller cascades help tell the story of Havasupai too. I want the photos to feel connected to the canyon around them, not just the water at the center.

I do not think every trip needs to become a checklist. Sometimes the view you keep coming back to is not the one you had in mind before you got there.

The hike into Havasupai

The waterfalls get most of the attention in a short video, but the hike is part of the story too. It is how you arrive, and how you leave with all those new memories. I have made that return hike over the years, and it is part of what I think about when I look through the photos.

That is why I like keeping a few photographs that show more of the trip. A view from the trail or a moment with a backpack on can bring back something different from a photograph of the falls.

The part I want to remember

Looking through my Havasupai photos and videos brings a little of the trip back. I still feel that connection long after I have made the hike home.

The views matter to me. So do the memories around them. That is what I want this story to hold onto.
