Sea Lion Caves in Florence, Oregon: What to Expect on a Visit

Our Oregon Coast stop included sea lions on the rocks, time inside the cave, coastal viewpoints and a few favorite treats from the shop.

We spent about an hour and a half to two hours at Sea Lion Caves during our May visit, then continued south along the Oregon Coast. The sea lions were outside on the rocky shoreline rather than inside the cave that day, but I loved the atmosphere and the coastal views.

This was a family visit, and the kids really enjoyed it. Between the animals, the cave and the shop, there was plenty to keep them interested. It is near Florence on Highway 101, so we worked it into our drive along the coast.

Will the sea lions be inside the cave?

On our visit, the sea lions were outside, and watching them on the rocks became a highlight of the stop. They move between the cave, outdoor ledges and ocean throughout the year. The seasonal wildlife guide explains what you might see when you go.

My favorite tip is to make time for the south lookout. I had been here before and knew to head down there, but I think it would be easy to overlook if you were focused on getting into the cave. We could hear the sea lions below us and watch them along the rocks. There were mounted viewers, too, and the coastline view was beautiful. I would bring a zoom lens for that stop.

There is walking as well as an elevator

There is still walking before and after the elevator ride, including stairs in the building, sloping outdoor paths and stairs to the lighthouse viewpoint. If steps or grades could affect your visit, review the accessibility details and contact the attraction about your needs.

Bring a wind-resistant layer and comfortable walking shoes for the outdoor paths.

With the kids, the main thing we watched was footing. There was moisture dripping inside the cave during our visit, and the outdoor paths were hilly. We kept an eye on them going downhill so they did not pick up speed and take off running. Nothing felt especially tricky for our family, but those were the places where we paid attention.

How the cave became a visitor attraction

Sea Lion Caves opened to the public in 1932, when visitors reached the cave using a trail and stairs. The elevator followed in 1961. The attraction’s history explains how access changed over time, while the animals continued using the cave as a wild habitat.

That is an important distinction when planning a visit. This is not a show with scheduled animal appearances. The cave, the exhibits and the coastal viewpoints are the attraction, and where the sea lions happen to be will shape your experience that day.

How long did our visit take?

Our visit took about an hour and a half to two hours, including the cave, outdoor viewpoints and shop. We continued south along the coast afterward.

The shop and learning about the cave

We parked across the road and walked over to the main building. Before heading to the viewpoints, we spent about 15 to 20 minutes in the shop. The fudge was a favorite. We tried Biscoff and sour blue raspberry.

Inside the cave, an informational film and displays gave us more to learn about the place. We looked out through the north opening toward the coast, then followed the stairs to the lower viewing area. There is also a sea lion bones exhibit about the animals’ anatomy.

Enjoying the cave and coastline

Watching the sea lions outside was a highlight, even though none were inside the cave that day.

Stay within the visitor areas and leave the sea lions undisturbed. If you bring a camera, a longer lens can help you see the animals more closely without approaching them.

Is it worth adding to an Oregon Coast trip?

I would consider it for the combination of wildlife and scenery. If your main reason for going is a specific animal sighting, ask what visitors are seeing that day and keep your expectations flexible. The official Sea Lion Caves website has current admission and operating information.
