We flew nonstop into Eugene for our Oregon trip and made Silver Falls State Park a day outing. South Falls is the waterfall this video revolves around: a place to see Oregon's forest scenery alongside one of the park's walk-behind waterfalls.
Start with the South Falls overlook
I recommend taking time at the overlook before heading down. Watching the water flow over the edge gives you a different perspective on how much water is moving, and it helps you see the waterfall and the trail as parts of the same landscape.

On the descent, do not make it only about getting to the waterfall. Look up at the trees, the moss, and everything growing around you. That forest detail is a big part of what makes the outing worth slowing down for.

Take your time on the walk-behind trail
Walking behind South Falls was the centerpiece of our visit. Take your time noticing the recessed rock around the marked path and the view from beneath the overhang, without leaving the trail. Down near the bridge, I enjoyed crossing over and exploring a little farther along the path without turning the day into a long hike.

I found our outing relatively easy, especially once we had descended and reached the flatter path below. That is my experience of this visit, not a promise about every visitor's ability or the whole Trail of Ten Falls. There is still a descent and a return climb, and wet conditions can change how the trail feels.
More than one waterfall to explore
The park's full Trail of Ten Falls loop is 7.2 miles, and there are shorter route options. South Falls is a 177-foot waterfall with a trail that passes behind it. Those are options for planning your own visit, not a list of everything we completed in the video. Official Silver Falls State Park information.
Check the park before choosing a route
As of September 15, 2026, the park's official page lists the Winter Falls Trail and Trailhead as closed following landslide damage. A day-use parking permit is also required. Check the latest park information before going, since closures can change the route you have in mind. Park notices and visit information.
Oregon is always worth the trip. Which waterfall would you want to see first?
