Some of my favorite discoveries in downtown Houston happened because we left the car at the hotel and walked. We found a whole world beneath the streets, had tacos I still remember and saw a different side of the city during a cold holiday trip.
Allegiant supported this trip.

We stayed at Hyatt Regency Houston Downtown. I loved the huge open atrium, and the location worked well for getting out to explore. The hotel did not sponsor our stay.
Working around getting the car from valet helped push us toward walking, which turned out to be a good part of the trip. Instead of driving between every stop, we spent more time discovering what was around us.
We were looking for a Chick-fil-A, following the map above ground and wondering where it was, when we realized it was below the street. That led us into Houston's tunnel network. It was surprising to find restaurants, offices and even medical services down there.
A cold front had come through during our visit, and we saw frozen fountains outside. Having an indoor way to get around was especially welcome. We used the tunnels for much of our walk toward Downtown Aquarium, then came back above ground near the performing arts area.
The tunnels are a working downtown network, not a round-the-clock tourist attraction. Most serve weekday business hours, with different access for some Theater District parking connections. Use the district's tunnel guide and map before relying on them for an evening or weekend route.

Lone Star Taco was one of the food stops I loved. We tried several tacos, and my favorite was the Buckaroo, with shredded beef barbacoa. That is the one I would look for again.
Browse the current menu if you want to add it to your downtown plans. It is more useful to choose a few things that appeal to you than to recreate every order from someone else's trip.
Beyond our own stops, there are several ways to build a day downtown. You might spend an afternoon around Discovery Green, focus on the Historic District or make dinner and a theater performance the main event. These are ideas for extending your visit, rather than a list of places we went inside.
The local tourism guide covers the area's parks, dining and entertainment. Use it to choose a starting point close to your plans rather than parking first and discovering that your main stop is across downtown.
Discovery Green is a 12-acre park beside the convention center, with public art and changing activities. It can be a useful starting point for a family outing or a break between other downtown stops. Check the event schedule for your dates rather than expecting every seasonal activity to be available.
Market Square Park offers a connection to an older part of the city. The site once held Houston's original City Hall and is now a gathering place in the Historic District. For a more focused history stop, look at Sam Houston Park and the Heritage Society's historic buildings. The downtown attractions overview introduces all three, so you can choose between a park visit and a longer history outing.
Downtown is also home to Houston's Theater District, with venues including the Alley Theatre, Wortham Theater Center and Hobby Center. If a performance interests you, choose the show first and make dinner plans nearby. That gives the evening a clear plan without requiring a full sightseeing itinerary.
Sports fans can build a visit around a Rockets or Astros home game instead. The Downtown Houston website is a starting point for events and restaurants. Look at your date before choosing a hotel or parking space, since an event can shape both where you spend the evening and how you get back afterward.
For more time outdoors, consider extending the outing toward the Buffalo Bayou trails. Visit Houston's walking and cycling context connects downtown parks with the bayou network. It is particularly useful if you want to compare a short city walk with a longer bike outing. Check a current route map and decide where you will turn back before setting off.
Check parking hours or your return transit service before heading out.
For a manageable first visit, I would choose one park or history stop, leave time for a meal and add an event only if it interests you. In hot weather, put the longer outdoor walk earlier or later in the day and keep an indoor option in the plan. A few connected stops are more useful than a list that sends you back and forth across the city.
Waterwall Park is in Uptown, not downtown. If you want to see both, plan the journey between them instead of treating the Waterwall as another stop on this walk.
