East Rock Park: New Haven Views and Fall Foliage

By Tyler Barks About 3 min read

We visited East Rock Park in New Haven during our October New England trip. Check summit access before going, especially if you need to drive rather than walk or cycle to the top.

East Rock was a quick stop on our October New England trip, about half an hour for the view and some photographs. We parked up near the overlook and walked a short distance from the car. We did not hike up from the bottom. It was an easy addition to our day at the time, although today's vehicle-access schedule needs checking before planning the same kind of stop.

Seeing New Haven from above

From the summit, the view reaches toward downtown, New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound. The city’s park page introduces the park and its surroundings.

The monument at the summit

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument was erected in 1887. It commemorates New Haven residents who died in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War and Civil War. The city's park history explains this landmark, which can be seen from across New Haven. It adds a piece of local history to a visit that might otherwise focus entirely on the view.

More than a summit viewpoint

East Rock includes trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and the Pardee Rose Garden. The local tourism guide is useful for deciding whether to focus on the summit or spend more time elsewhere in the park. A garden visit, a family picnic and a climb to the top are different outings, so choose according to your group's interests rather than treating every activity as part of one route.

Autumn at East Rock

I remember soft light and fall colors that really stood out from above. I believe it was cloudy that day, which worked beautifully for the photographs. We had been following autumn through several states, and this short stop gave us another perspective on the changing color without taking up a whole hiking day.

Foliage timing varies each year. Check local updates if fall color is the reason for your trip.

Can you drive to the summit?

As checked in September 2026, the city's park page gives summit access on foot or by bicycle Monday through Saturday, with car access on Sundays only. Our past drive-up visit is not a promise of daily vehicle access. Check current access arrangements before setting out, especially if you need to drive to the top.

Choose your walking route from a current park map and allow time for the return.

Enjoying the views safely

Use designated viewing areas, respect barriers and keep well back from exposed edges. Stop on stable ground before taking photographs.

Stay clear of traffic when exploring the wooded roads.

Adding East Rock to a Connecticut trip

For another Connecticut outing, Wadsworth Falls has waterfall access and walking trails.

You can also stay closer and explore the East Rock neighborhood after the park. East Rock Market is a food hall on Nicoll Street, giving a group several dining options in one place. Look at its current vendors and hours when planning a meal. It is an idea for extending your visit, rather than somewhere you need to fit between two long hikes.
