Discover the hidden Open Ceiling Sea Cave at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, an epic coastal adventure featuring stunning views, tide pools, and one of California’s most unique sea caves. Perfect for hiking, photography, and off-the-beaten-path exploration.
Looking for a jaw-dropping natural wonder hidden right along the San Diego coast? The Open Ceiling Sea Cave at Sunset Cliffs is one of the most epic, under-the-radar gems in Southern California. If you're into coastal adventures, sea caves, or just want that “how is this real?” moment, keep reading.
Tucked away near Luscomb’s Point, this unique sea cave in San Diego isn’t on most tourist maps. To get there, head toward the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park area and aim to arrive during a negative low tide. This is crucial if you actually want to reach the cave without swimming for it.
Once you park, look for the large fenced gate at the top of the cliffs. That’s your landmark. Walk along the cliffs to where surfers descend to the ocean and take the worn-in steps down to the rocky shoreline.
Pro Tip: Use tide charts to plan your trip. You’ll want tides around -1.8 feet or lower to safely reach the cave.
The hike isn’t long at just about 0.1 miles, but it’s slippery, rocky, and may involve knee-deep wading depending on the tide. Solid water shoes or grippy hiking sandals are a must. You’ll pass a small cove and circle around one more outcropping before the cave comes into view.
This is one of those off-the-beaten-path San Diego hikes that feels like a real discovery.
As you step inside, the sound of crashing waves surrounds you, and then you look up. The open ceiling lets in natural light that dances off the wet rock walls. It’s moody, surreal, and absolutely perfect for anyone hunting San Diego photography spots.
Even when there are a handful of people inside, the space doesn’t feel cramped. It’s one of the best hidden spots in San Diego for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and content creators alike.
📸 Best time to visit: Right at sunset during a low tide. Golden light pours into the cave through the ceiling, creating a dream-like scene.
✅ Check tide levels, only go during negative low tides
✅ Wear proper footwear for slippery rocks
✅ Be okay with getting a little wet
✅ Respect the cave, pack out what you bring in
The Sunset Cliffs Open Ceiling Sea Cave is one of the most magical places along the California coast. It’s raw, dramatic, and still relatively undiscovered. Whether you’re building a San Diego weekend itinerary or scouting Instagram-worthy locations in California, this spot is 100% worth the adventure.
