We visited Wadsworth Falls during our New England trip. For a waterfall stop, check the Cherry Hill Road parking area rather than assuming the main park entrance is the closest access.

We caught a break in the rain at Wadsworth Falls during our New England trip. It was already getting toward dusk, and the falls were roaring. We had a short walk from where we parked, then spent our time taking long exposures and listening to the water through the forest. It was a brief stop, but the sound and force of the falls made it memorable.
The photographs soften the moving water in a way that feels very different from standing beside it. That contrast was what I enjoyed working with as the light faded. For a visit now, plan to finish before the park's sunset closing time rather than using our late arrival as a schedule.
Wadsworth Falls State Park is in Middlefield and Middletown, Connecticut. Its main address is 721 Wadsworth Street, while waterfall parking is off Cherry Hill Road.
Use the park map to choose your arrival point rather than assuming the main entrance is the closest place to the waterfall.

Swimming and picnicking are not permitted at Big Falls. The park’s designated swimming and picnic areas are elsewhere.
Keep away from the lip of the waterfall, moving water and wet ledges. Follow posted barriers and the park’s guidance.
Wadsworth Falls became a state park in 1942, but the landscape's story reaches much farther back. The state's geology notes connect its basalt and sandstone with ancient lava flows and the breakup of Pangea. It is a useful bit of background for a walk, particularly if you are traveling with children interested in how waterfalls and valleys form.
There are 4.5 miles of trails to explore. Use its map to choose a route; you do not need to walk the full network to visit the falls.
Published hours are 8 a.m. to sunset. Check current park information for notices and facilities before leaving.

For a brief stop, make the falls your priority and keep the rest of the day flexible. For a longer outing, choose a trail from the map and plan lunch in the designated picnic area. Keeping those two plans separate avoids arriving at the waterfall with swimming gear or a picnic and discovering that you need to move elsewhere.
Our visit was part of a New England road trip, and the park can fit that kind of itinerary without requiring an entire hiking day. If you are connecting it with New Haven, allow for the drive and choose whether you want another outdoor stop at East Rock or time in the city. You do not need to turn both visits into long walks on the same day.
