Willey House Historic Site: Fall Foliage in Crawford Notch

By Tyler Barks About 4 min read

Willey House Historic Site was a stop on our October New England trip. The grounds have walking trails, a pond and a picnic area, along with information about the family who lived here.

We reached the Willey House area of Crawford Notch around sunset, and it became one of my favorite stops of our New England trip. We parked the Jeep near the water, took a short walk and spent much of the visit photographing the mountain reflections. The water was so still that I kept coming back to it with the camera. One of those mountain photographs is still a favorite from the trip.

Finding the site

Willey House Historic Site is in Crawford Notch State Park in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. You will find it at 1464 US Route 302, Hart’s Location.

Use the park’s directions when planning your drive through the notch.

The history of Willey House

Samuel Willey Jr., his wife and five children lived here and operated an inn. During the storm of August 28, 1826, a landslide killed the family and two hired men.

The house survived as the slide divided around a ledge, but it later burned in 1898. The buildings at the site today are not the original family home. Read the New Hampshire State Parks history for the fuller account.

Walking the grounds

Our visit was a short exploration of the grounds, not a big mountain hike. We photographed the bridge and used long exposures around the water as the light faded. After a day of stopping for photos along the mountain drive, having so much to work with close to where we parked was a highlight.

The site includes walking trails, a small reservoir, a picnic area and a country store. Check the state’s day-trip guide and current opening information if you want to include the store or indoor facilities.

Choose walks from the park map and ask about accessibility if you have specific needs.

For a shorter visit, begin with the historical information and then walk around the pond area. If the store is open, it can be a convenient place to take a break before continuing through the notch. The state describes the site as a family-friendly stop, but a walk here should not be confused with the longer mountain hikes elsewhere in the park.

Why stop in Crawford Notch?

Route 302 runs through the notch, making Willey House a practical stop during a drive through the White Mountains. The attraction is the combination of accessible grounds and a specific local story. You can learn about the 1826 disaster without committing to a summit hike, then decide how much more of the area you want to explore.

The state's Crawford Notch guide also highlights the area's railroad history and waterfall outings. Use the historic site as a starting point for learning about the notch, not as evidence that every nearby attraction is within a short walk. If you have a train trip or hike in mind, plan it as its own activity.

More time in Crawford Notch

Waterfall hikes such as Ripley Falls and Arethusa Falls need their own preparation and time. Choose one that suits your group rather than treating it as a quick extension of a pond-side stroll.

For an autumn trip, check White Mountains foliage updates close to your dates. Color changes across the region at different times.
